"Wooden Indian"

(A Folk Song)

I'm an old wooden Indian; alone in my wood.

But I'll drink your Rye-whiskey, I'll do as I should . . .

Like my father before me--and his father, too.

We'd hunt the wild Buffalo, where they used to roam.

'Made 'sad rags' into 'glad rags,' 'painted stories on stone . . .

Like my father before me--and his father, too.

We fought like brave warriors, with feathers in our band.

The Great Chiefs did tell us: "Alone we must stand."

Like my father before me--and his father, too.

I'm an old wooden Indian; alone in my wood.

But I'll drink your Rye-whiskey, I'll do as I should . . .

Like my fathers before me--and their fathers, too.

Like my father before me--and I know it's true.
